A statistical projection of Auckland’s 2021 population figures has revealed that just over 50% will be of European descent
London, UK (Pryce Warner International) February 16th, 2012 - Due to rising high-school standards and an environmentally-friendly way of life, Auckland is attracting an escalating number of expat settlers.
New Zealand has always been popular amongst those looking to move abroad and this is reflected by Auckland’s sizable European community, but it now seems that Asian Expats are also arriving in greater numbers.
A spokesperson for the social and community health department at the University of Auckland commented: “Auckland is a magnet for Asian immigrants at present, the immigration policy targets people who help increase population by births, favouring the young, affluent and qualified, and starting a family or raising a family is why many of them initially choose to come to New Zealand. For new migrants, many would initially like to stay in a place where they have got friends or relatives, and Auckland is also more likely to be able to offer them this compared to other New Zealand cities. An increase in mixed marriages means that in 2021, many Aucklanders will identify with more than just one ethnicity; a good thing for building better race relations and cultural understanding.”

Calculations show that in a decade from now Europeans will account for 71% of New Zealand’s entire population whilst Asian descendents will see an increase of 2% to 14%, trends that contrast sharply with the projections made for the two major cities.
The European community is expected to fall as the Asian community rises in the capital city of Wellington and throughout the Canterbury region, which is notably home to Christchurch, New Zealand’s second largest city.
The number of UK visitors to New Zealand has overall been in decline since 2007 and statistics show that in December 2011, visitors to New Zealand mainly came from Malaysia, China and Singapore as well as, predictably, Australia.
