After the Dutch government announced plans to restrict dual nationality, Expats have launched a petition to stop the restrictions
London, UK (Pryce Warner International) November 2nd, 2011 – New restrictions on dual nationality are being readied by the Dutch government that will affect thousands of Dutch Expats.
In an attempt to counter the plans Dutch Expats have set up an online petition to try and stop the proposed changes. So far the petition has over 7000 signatures.
The proposed changes in legislation state that Dutch Expats who adopt a second nationality will automatically be considered “ex Dutch-nationals”. This would in turn make it much more difficult to them to return to the Netherlands and also for their children to retain Dutch citizenship.

Campaigners claim that adopting a second nationality does not constitute a loss of Dutch identity or loyalty, and that often the second nationality is only taken for practical purposes.
Government spokesmen have stated that the legislation is only intended to stop people foreign nationals retaining their original nationality when they become Dutch, and that the impact on Expats was a “side effect”.
David Harra, a Senior Market & Investment Analyst with Pryce Warner International, a Financial Services Provider for Expats, commented: “These type of restrictions can often impact Expats and living outside your home country it can sometimes be difficult to keep up to date with new laws that may affect you. This a great initiative by Dutch Expats and petitions can often help bring attention to an issue and subsequently lead to amendments in legislation. Expats of all stripes should take notice and ensure that they work to actively protect their rights, as governments can occasionally introduce laws that inadvertently negatively impact Expats.”
