Whilst overall employment prospects in New Zealand are decreasing the IT sector is making big gains
London, UK (Pryce Warner International) February 8th, 2012 - Whilst the education, construction and engineering sectors of New Zealand presented fewer opportunities in the closing months of 2011, there was a trend-defying rise in the number of IT jobs advertised on-line, proving the Information Technology sector to be a key area of employment for job seekers to investigate.
In the final months of 2011 vacancies increased by 6.2% with this rising to 20% in Canterbury. The rise came whilst the construction sector experienced a downturn of 8.9%, the education sector decreased by 8.2% and overall vacancies were down.
Over the same period last year the overall vacancies in New Zealand were up by 7.2% with the IT sector showing no significant gains.

This suggests that post-recession, New Zealand has seen a downturn in job prospects but that IT and skilled computing work remains strong and also potentially offers good prospects to Expats.
As well as suggesting why the Canterbury region defied all market trends and research results, Sankar Ramasamy, the Department of Labour‘s acting general manager of labour and immigration research, commented: “The monthly nationwide decrease shows employers were cautious about hiring over December, while the fall since a peak in May 2011 indicates a sluggish labour market. The department forecasts employment growth of 1.3% in the March 2012 year and 1.6% in 2013. This growth in the Canterbury region is largely due to reconstruction activities in the area.”
