The Indian Ambassador to Bahrain is urging the Bahraini government to remove the work ban on indebted Expats
London, UK (Pryce Warner International) February 3rd, 2012 – Last week the Indian Ambassador to Bahrain, Mohan Kumar, initiated a fresh round of demands to remove the work ban imposed on Expats that cannot repay loans.
Expats who fail to repay loans have a travel ban imposed on them, along with a work ban. He highlighted the particular case of Leslie Rosario, who has been unable to work since the travel ban was imposed several years ago.
Mr Rosario commented: “I face a travel ban for owing money to two banks and was refused residency by the immigration department. This means I cannot get a work permit and cannot earn money to repay debts or leave the country.”
For several years there have been calls to remove this work ban as it creates a catch 22 for those in debt. Anyone who falls into debt is no longer allowed to work so cannot find a way to repay it, and with the travel ban they are not able to find work in a neighbouring country.

Mr Kumar commented: “The Bahraini government must find a solution to this problem…they must allow people with travel bans to work in Bahrain.”
The case of Mr Rosario is not the first of this kind. Many Expats that work in low paid and unskilled jobs have found themselves at the mercy of this law over the past few years.
With a very large amount of the Expats in Bahrain and the middle east coming from the Indian sub-continent, the Indian government seem to be putting added pressure on the Bahraini government to ensure that it’s citizens are able to work to repay loans.
At present the Bahraini government has not announced any intention of altering this situation.
