Dogmatic protocol and doubled coffin prices have been cited as the key causes behind the inflated repatriation fees faced by Dubai’s expat community.
London, UK (Pryce Warner International) February 13th, 2012 - Costs have recently risen from 1200 dirhams to 2300 dirhams (approx 472€).
The Dubai Health Authority approves and regulates the services of the single company who manufacture the specially designed coffins used to repatriate the bodies of those who’ve passed away.
A spokesperson commented on the expensive process: “After embalming, we place the body in the coffin and seal the coffin and this takes place under the direct supervision of the Dubai Health Authority staff who are also responsible for transferring the coffins to the airport, through the municipality ambulance.”

Alternative routes to more cost-effective cremations and burials are now being sought by an increasing number of underprivileged expats who are typically forced to borrow unaffordable amounts of money from friends and family.
The issue reaches beyond Dubai and actually affects almost 85% of the entire UAE populace, which predominantly consists of low-income expats from countries such as the Philippines and India.
