Due to increasingly violent protests, US Expats in Chile have been warned by the US Embassy to avoid affected areas in Santiago.
London, UK (Pryce Warner International) August 26th, 2011 – Though the majority of protests have been peaceful, some protesters in Chile have destroyed property and clashed with authorities.
Concerned that the protests are becoming increasingly violent the US embassy warned its citizens to avoid any areas affected by demonstrators.
The warning was also issued in anticipation of upcoming protests and concerns over potentially violent protests on the 11th of September, which sees the anniversary of Chile’s 1973 coup against Salvador Allende.
Protests are being organised by unions and students trying to get better working conditions and free education.

Current President Sebastian Pinera has seen his approval-rating sink rapidly since demonstrations began in July. Despite several attempted negotiations agreements have not been met as students are holding out for all their demands to be met.
Student protesters are primary holding sleep-ins, boycotting lectures, marches and other forms of civil disobedience to protest against what they see as an unfair education system.
Despite warnings from the US embassy some Americans are getting involved in the protests and showing their support for the movements. Many Expats from around the world have expressed support for the demonstrators and are disregarding what they see as an overly cautious warning from the US embassy.
This has been reinforced by the fact that so far no other embassy has advised its citizens avoid the demonstrations.
David Harra, a Senior Market & Investment Analyst with Pryce Warner International, a Financial Services Provider for Expats, commented: “Though only the US embassy has issued a warning to Expats it would still be advisable for anyone living in or visiting Chile to exercise caution when planning on being near any demonstrations.”
