The best place for Expats to live and work is Vienna according to a new study
London, UK (Pryce Warner International) December 1st, 2011 – Europe was found to be the best continent with German cities occupying several places in the top ten.
Munich was voted 4th, Dusseldorf 5th and Frankfurt 7th. Switzerland also came out well with Geneva and Bern voted 8th and 9th respectively.
In the top 25 cities over half were in Europe, with London being the highest ranked in the UK (38th).

The study was conducted by Mercer to help companies decide fair Expat packages when relocating individuals internationally. With the constant flux in standard of living across the world the study aims to ensure that Expats are always given the most up-to-date information on where they are heading and that companies are able to offer them the most appropriate salary and benefits as possible.
Khartoum in Sudan was voted as having one of the lowest quality of living along with Port au Prine, N’Djamena and Bagdhad all occupying the bottom 25 of the list of over 200 cities.
In terms of personal safety, Luxembourg was voted the highest followed by Bern. Helsinki, Zurich, Vienna and Stockholm also rated very highly in terms of personal safety. This was based on internal stability, crime levels, quality of law enforcement and relative international relations. Somewhat predictably, Bagdhad was found to be the worst city in the world for personal safety.
Despite Europe’s strong showing, Slagin Parakatil, senior researcher at Mercer suggested that the present crisis may affect this: “Economic turmoil, high levels of unemployment and lack of confidence in political institutions make their future positions hard to predict. Countries such Austria, Germany and Switzerland still fare particularly well in both the quality of living and personal safety rankings, yet they are not immune from decreases in living standards if this uncertainty persists.”
